All-wheel drive (AWD) and four-wheel drive (4WD) are frequently used interchangeably in car marketing, but they describe genuinely different systems built for different use cases. AWD systems typically operate automatically and continuously, sending power to whichever wheels have the most traction, and are optimised for everyday road conditions like rain, light snow, or loose gravel rather than serious off-roading.
4WD systems, by contrast, are usually driver-selectable with low-range gearing options specifically built for genuine off-road situations — deep mud, rock crawling, or steep inclines — where AWD systems would struggle or aren't designed to operate at all.
For the vast majority of Indian SUV buyers who occasionally encounter poor road conditions but rarely go genuinely off-road, AWD offers most of the real-world traction benefit without the added weight, complexity and fuel-efficiency penalty that comes with a true 4WD system.
